1:00 – 1:15 p.m. Welcome

1:15 – 1:30 p.m. Court Reporter Committee/State Bar of South Dakota

Judge Michael Day, Chair of the South Dakota Court Reporter Committee, and other members of the committee will give an update on their ongoing efforts for recruitment and the South Dakota State Bar resolution that was recently signed. Andrew Fergel, Executive Director of the State Bar of South Dakota will address the Bar’s continued support for court reporters.

1:30 – 2:45 p.m. Personal Security and Situational Awareness – .125 CEUs

Scott Sheldon, Security and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for UJS will present on developing situational awareness and how to keep yourself safe in the workplace. Scott retired from the South Dakota Highway Patrol in 2017 after nearly 27 years. He then worked for DSS in Division of Medical Services Program Integrity and Medicaid Fraud for 4 years. He started with UJS in 2021 and is currently working through the process of implementing and reviewing security measures for court locations in the state. 

Participants will learn:

  • Ways to ensure you are always aware of your surroundings even when home
  • Identify possible threats and indicators
  • Develop and maintain mental toughness and work to “harden the target” at all times

2:45 – 3:00 p.m. Break

3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Real Colors Personality Test – .1 CEUs

Sarah Linn, Judicial Branch Educator for UJS, will present several activities to help each employee determine their “color” or personality type common to all people. This personality test takes temperament theory to real life application. Sarah is a certified Real Colors test facilitator and has been an educator for 10+ years. 

Participants will learn:

  • Understand human behavior
  • Uncover motivators specific to each temperament
  • Improve communication with others

4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Ergonomics in the Workplace – .1 CEUs

Dr. Carter Kerk, PhD, PE, CSP, CPE is a Professor in the Industrial Engineering Department at South Dakota School of Mines. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (Michigan and South Dakota), a Certified Safety Professional, and a Certified Professional Ergonomist. Prior to joining SD Mines, Dr. Kerk was an assistant professor in the Industrial Engineering Department and Safety Engineering Program at Texas A&M University. He will present on ergonomics in the workplace.

Participants will learn:

  • Basics of ergonomics
  • How to improve their personal workplace ergonomics

Jill Janecke, MS, LPC-MH, has been a mental health counselor since 2005. She is the founder of Rising Hope Together Inc., Rising Hope Counseling, and Rise, Hope, Live. Her mission is to reduce barriers for people to access hope and quality services in rural areas. Jill embraces learning to help people achieve their goals and grow from the inside out. 

Participants will learn:

  • Ways to identify and overcome burnout
  • Ways to prevent burnout in the workplace
  • Way to gain and develop happiness
