(Section 3.01)

Part 1 – Introduction, Parentheticals and Introductory Elements Defined (with examples) The session will begin with a review of the basics of commas and move to a brief discussion of some of the changes in the rules over the last few years. This will be followed by a discussion of parentheticals — definition, types, examples – and how to punctuation them. After this will follow a definition of introductory elements and how to differentiate the types.

Part 2 – Punctuating Introductory Elements (at the beginning of a sentence and at the beginning of the second part of sentences connected by a coordinate conjunction) The session will be devoted to the punctuation rules for introductory elements. This will be followed by a discussion of the second part of a compound sentence that follows a coordinate conjunction and the rules for punctuating the intervening elements. Each session will allow for audience participation and questions from the attendees. Time will be allowed for general questions and a discussion of those.

Presenting the Court Reporting Profession to Middle and High School Students Teresa Benson, RMR, CRR, an official court reporter for Pennington County, SD, has presented at several career day events in western South Dakota. Teresa will share her experience and tips on how to best use the online resources provided by NCRA to present the career of court reporting/captioning/CART to middle and high school students.

Learning Objectives: Court reporters across the nation are being called upon to promote the career of court reporting/captioning/CART to middle and high school students. This course will instruct court reporters on where to find online NCRA resources, how to use them in a presentation, and how to confidently give a presentation to middle and high school students to pique their interest in exploring this profession.

Sex Trafficking in South Dakota Treasured Lives is a nonprofit survivor led anti-trafficking organization in South Dakota whose mission is to provide avenues of healing, safety, and hope for those exploited by sex trafficking. Treasured Lives collaborates with the Rapid City Police Department, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Department, Call to Freedom, and other organizations to provide a safe environment for survivors of sex trafficking and spread awareness and education regarding sexual exploitation in order to help end sex trafficking and abuse. Survivor Kelly Patterson, founder of Treasured Lives, serves as a consultant for a number of anti-trafficking organizations, including the West River Human Trafficking Task Force and the South Dakota Survivor Task Force. Kelly published her autobiography, From Trafficked to Treasured, in 2018. The Pendulum and her co-authored book, Freedom Cry, will be published soon.

As a survivor leader, Gina Dvorak advocates for peer counseling and support through leading support groups and mentoring other survivors. She has dedicated her time to helping survivors of various forms of trauma to heal and grow.

Together through Treasured lives, Kelly and Gina focus on the individual needs of trauma survivors, along with the need for community awareness and education in order to help end sex trafficking and abuse.

Learning Objectives: This seminar will spread awareness about the issue of sex trafficking in our state, help us identify signs and symptoms of sex trafficking, and educate us about what we can do as a community to help.

Learning Objectives: Reporters will learn about the demands and challenges of international reporting, as well as its rewards.
