Judge Michael Day and Judge Bobbi Rank, co-chairs of the Court Record Preservation Committee and other members of the committee will give an update on their ongoing efforts for recruitment and the newly created committee.

Ethical Implications of AI Use and the Judiciary

Gary Marchant is a Regent’s Professor of Law and director of the Center for Law, Science and Innovation. His research interests include legal aspects of genomics and personalized medicine, the use of genetic information in environmental regulation, risk and the precautionary principle, and governance of emerging technologies such as nanotechnology, neuroscience, biotechnology and artificial intelligence. Professor Marchant frequently lectures about the intersection of law and science at national and international conferences. He has authored more than 150 articles and book chapters on various issues relating to emerging technologies. Among other activities, he has served on six National Academy of Sciences committees, has been the principal investigator on several major grants, and has organized numerous academic conferences on law and science issues. He is an elected lifetime member of the American Law Institute and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science

Participants will learn:
Current application and potential benefits of AI use in the judiciary, including bias, accountability, and confidentiality.
Ethical considerations when using AI in the judiciary.
Strategies for ethical implementation of AI in the judiciary.

Anissa Nierenberger is a certified professional realtime trainer. She has fun helping reporters boost their realtime skills so that they can continue to keep up with the rapid pace of technology and make more money! As a very young girl, Anissa became intrigued with typewriters when she first saw and heard a blue IBM Selectric typewriter at her dentist office. During a high school career day with a court reporter, she saw a steno machine and knew that steno was going to be her passion! Her career includes three decades of captioning news, sports and tech captioning at Facebook and Amazon. She has researched and created Dictionary Jumpstart, the only dictionary building program in the industry. DJ consists of 10 modules containing over 165,000 words that can be added to your dictionary at 1,000 words per hour! Over 1600 stenographers have successfully attained their realtime goals and certifications after training with Anissa. Reporters turn to Anissa when they're ready to upgrade their careers! Anissa is the author of four books that help reporters write shorter by learning brief families. Most recently Anissa has created STENŌphonătic, the first word building card game in English and steno!

Law and Order: The Role of Situational Awareness in the Courtroom

Scott Sheldon, Security and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for UJS will present on developing situational awareness and how to keep yourself safe in the workplace. Scott retired from the South Dakota Highway Patrol in 2017 after nearly 27 years. He then worked for DSS in Division of Medical Services Program Integrity and Medicaid Fraud for 4 years. He started with UJS in 2021 and is currently working through the process of implementing and reviewing security measures for court locations in the state.

Participants will learn:
The importance of self-awareness in the courtroom using real-world scenarios
Understanding of the responsibilities of court employees to maintain safety in the courtroom
Learn practical strategies for enhancing situational awareness and safety in the courtroom.

Teri Beeson, M.S.A., is the Education and Public Awareness Specialist for the Children’s Home Society of South Dakota. She was previously the SANE Program Coordinator for the Center of Prevention of Child Maltreatment at the University of South Dakota.
